The official names of Wales’ largest national park and tallest mountain have caused some confusion, with many people wondering why Snowdon and Snowdonia are no longer in use. However, Welsh speakers argue that Eryri and Yr Wyddfa have always been the correct names. Welsh writer and broadcaster Tudur Owen stated, “It would feel odd for us to use things like Snowdon and Snowdonia, because they just feel so alien and they’re not words that people in the area use.”
While many visitors to Yr Wyddfa (also known as Snowdon) continue to use the old names, the majority of locals believe the switch to the Welsh names is a positive change. The national park authority conducted a survey and found that the majority of visitors viewed the name change as positive. They now plan to use Yr Wyddfa and Eryri in all official communication.
Mr Owen believes that the move should be viewed as a change in brand, arguing that “companies do successfully [change their branding] all the time.” He also believes that Welsh people have a long history with these names and that using them connects people to the country’s heritage.
Although some visitors may not be familiar with the Welsh names, Mr Owen states that they are still free to use the old names. However, he hopes that people will make an informed choice and that Wales can become a truly bilingual country where the use of both English and Welsh is common.
While there have been some concerns about pronunciation, the park authority has found that the majority of visitors are supportive of the change. In fact, Mr Owen has seen an increase in companies adopting Eryri names, and the summit of Yr Wyddfa remains crowded. Overall, the change in names appears to be a positive one, connecting people to the country’s history and enabling them to engage with the Welsh language and heritage
