Famed actor Timothy West has passed away at 90 years old, according to a statement released by his family. West was known for his versatility on stage and screen, having starred in dramas like Bleak House and Gentleman Jack, sitcoms like Not Going Out and Bedtime, and even soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders. He had a long and successful career and was often hailed as one of Britain’s most distinguished actors.
West was survived by his wife, Prunella Scales, to whom he was married for over 60 years. The couple had been the subjects of Channel 4’s Great Canal Journeys for 10 series. Scales has been battling vascular dementia for over 20 years.
Many in the entertainment industry mourned West’s death, with broadcaster Piers Morgan reminiscing about his Life Stories interview with West and Tracy-Ann Oberman, a fellow actress, calling him “the most wonderful actor and human being.” Meanwhile, Dame Joanna Lumley praised West and Scales for their advocacy for living with dementia.
Born in Bradford in 1934, West’s parents were esteemed actors Lockwood West and Olive Carleton-Crowe. West began his career as an assistant stage manager and soon rose to critical acclaim on stage and screen. He played Winston Churchill in several productions and played a villainous character in the film adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s The Day of the Jackal.
West’s final on-screen appearance was in Wednesday’s episode of BBC One’s Doctors. Many expressed condolences to West’s family and friends at the news of his passing
