A young girl and her mother were threatened by a man as they rode their bikes alongside the Union Canal at Meggetland in Edinburgh. The child told reporters that the man blocked her path and shouted at her about the canal path being for pedestrians only. He then threatened to throw her into the canal before making a similar threat against her mother when she caught up to them. Prompted by reports from other victims of similar incidents in the area, community policing units have increased their patrols in the area.
The man is described as being in his 50s or 60s, bald, and with large, hazel eyes. The child noted that he was eating a packet of cheese and onion crisps and seemed angry. The mother of the girl asked him if he was the “canal pusher,” a man who had pushed people into the water in 2022. This enraged the man who puffed himself up and looked like he was going to carry out his threat. Fearing for their safety, the mother and daughter agreed to walk their bikes home.
Police Scotland has confirmed that it is aware of similar incidents in the area, but that they are not linking the most recent case to any other crimes. Community policing teams are conducting additional, high-visibility patrols of the Union Canal in response to reports of threatening and assaultive behaviour on the footpaths along the canal in the Edinburgh area.
The girl and her mother have remained anonymous, expressing their fear of the man. While reporting the incident, the girl appeared to be relieved that the police and other community members are taking the matter seriously. They are all hopeful that the man responsible will be caught before he carries out his threats against someone else
