Craigavon: Mum says her autistic son is like a prisoner in hospital


Aidan Boustred, a 10-year-old boy with severe autism, has spent 10 months in a psychiatric hospital in England. His mother has warned he is being “locked away and robbed of a future” as he awaits a permanent residence outside of hospital.
Speaking of her family’s “nightmare,” mother Natalie said her son was being taken “out of society,” the BBC reported. Aidan has a Care Quality Commission legal right to a say in his treatment, but is not able to communicate in a conventional manner. He is fitted with a tracker to keep him safe at all times; if he were to flee, he would not understand how to return.
NHS England said it was working to provide suitable accommodation for children and adults with autism and learning disabilities. But 1,400 such patients are in mental health hospitals, with more than 200 detained “far” from homes as far apart as Cornwall and Manchester, because there is no community care available.
Parents, carers and councils have warned that the current system is detaining some autistic children and adults for years, with parents unable to cope. Campaigner Dr Sally Powis told the BBC the situation was a “national scandal” that had been ignored for too long
