Serving police officer arrested on suspicion of supporting Hamas


On Tuesday, a police constable in his thirties from South West England was arrested on suspicion of providing support to Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, according to counterterrorism police. The suspected support allegedly involved online activity, and the officer has been taken to a police custody unit outside Gloucestershire. Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South West (CTPSW) made the arrest on a property in Gloucester, and also searched a vehicle and an address in the area.

Assistant Chief Constable Arman Mathieson from Gloucestershire Police said that the searches were intended to find digital devices for analysis. “The arrest of a serving officer on suspicion of such a serious offence will no doubt cause our communities concern, as it does everyone who works for Gloucestershire Police,” he added. “The arrest has been made to allow for a prompt and effective investigation to take place and we must not draw any conclusions at this stage.”
