Newspaper headlines: 'Pressure mounts on Welby' and Lineker to leave MOTD


Calls are growing for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, to resign following a damning report into prolific child sex abuser John Smyth. The report showed Welby failed to act in 2013 when presented with details of Smyth’s case, meaning he was never brought to justice. Welby has acknowledged his failure to “energetically investigate” and considered resigning, but has so far decided to stay in his role. The Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, has become the most senior Church leader to demand Welby’s resignation. A petition from three members of the Church’s governing body has attracted over 6,500 signatures.

One of the men abused by Smyth has told The Times that Welby’s handling of the case was a “dereliction of duty”. The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has also declined to offer public support to the Archbishop. Kim Leadbeater, the MP proposing a bill to legalise assisted dying in the UK, has pledged the legislation would have the “strictest protections and safeguards of any legislation anywhere in the world”. To be eligible, patients will need to be expected to die within six months, have the capacity to opt for their own death and have judicial approval.

The UK government is investigating year-round sewage testing in wild swimming spots as well as infrastructure repair costs to reduce illegal sewage spills. Water minister Emma Hardy acknowledged water bills will rise as part of the effort. In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election in the US, the European Union is set to direct billions more in funding to defence and security. Current EU funds designed to reduce inequality between member states may be redirected to boost arms manufacturing and reinforce bridges and roads that can bear the weight of tanks.

Gary Lineker will step down from presenting BBC’s Match of the Day at the end of the season following the 2026 World Cup – the Sun reports. Lineker wants to leave the show while still at the top of his career. The move is being described as “agreed by both sides” and is seen as shocking, according to the Daily Mirror. It brings to an end a 25-year career on the show
