The MTV Europe Music Awards saw many stars in attendance, including Rita Ora who hosted the event and paid tribute to Liam Payne who worked with her on their song “For You.” Ora’s tribute was delivered in a poignant moment while she was dressed in black and called Payne “one of the kindest people that I knew.” The event witnessed other major winners including Taylor Swift, who made history as the first person to win best artist three times in the EMAs’ 30-year history. The night was also highlighted by celebrities who won in their respective categories, such as Raye, Sabrina Carpenter, Tyla and Benson Boone.
This was the first MTV EMA since 2017 that was held in the UK, and the third time Rita Ora hosted the event. During the show, she stopped the upbeat tone for a moment to remember Payne, saying: “We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world and my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight.” Ora then introduced a short video featuring photos of Payne and a snippet of One Direction’s song “Night Changes”.
Swift won four awards including best artist, video, live act and US artist, however, she was unable to attend the ceremony as she was preparing to resume her tour in Canada. Sabrina Carpenter was also absent, as she had a concert in San Diego, where she won the award for best song for her hit “Espresso.” Liam Gallagher won for best rock act, though he was not present at the ceremony.
Busta Rhymes received the global icon award while US singer-songwriter Benson Boone won the best new artist award. The ceremony also featured Shaun Ryder and Bez, who seemed like they would steal the show during an unpredictable interview with Ora. The night’s presenters included singer Mabel and her mother Neneh Cherry, who was among the winners at the first EMAs in 1994, as her duet with Youssou N’Dour – “7 Seconds” – was named the best song.
The show was closed by Pet Shop Boys with musicians from the Manchester Camerata. The awards ceremony was a great event to witness the recognition given to the largest pool of celebrity honorees of the year
