Sugar Hut: The TOWIE hotspot made famous by its celebrity guests

For many, the beating heart of Essex can be found within the confines of the Sugar Hut nightclub in Brentwood. This celebrity hotspot, made famous by its appearances on The Only Way Is Essex, is now preparing to close its doors for good with a price tag of 3.85 million pounds for potential buyers.

Sugar Hut was initially opened in 2004 on Brentwood High Street. Six years later, it shot to fame as the backdrop to many arguments and dramatic scenes on the hit show TOWIE, which first aired in 2010. However, prior to its TOWIE stardom, the venue was Brentwood’s most historic pub, The White Hart. The pub dates back to at least 1500, offering an essential resting spot for travellers between London, Colchester, and further afield in Suffolk and Norfolk.

Mick Norcross, who once owned Sugar Hut and was also introduced as one of the TOWIE stars, made sure the club stood out with its famous clientele, including Pamela Anderson, Frank Lampard, and Teddy Sheringham. In addition, regular TOWIE stars, including Joey Essex, Mark Wright, and Gemma Collins, all partied on the dance floor. Despite the increased exposure from the ITV cameras, Norcross sold the venue in 2019, two years before his death, because he did not want the TOWIE association to continue.

The bar remains a popular gathering place for celebrities, hosting wrap parties for shows like Celebrity Big Brother and Love Island while also employing “Sugar Hut Honeys” to draw crowds in. In 2019, Nigel Farage, who was the Brexit Party’s leader, even held a rally there. Norcross sold the venue in 2019 for reasons mentioned earlier, and it opened again in October 2022, with the nightclub’s website promoting the revamped venue as being a “new generation of beautiful party-goers,” with immersive theatre shows and different music genres.

Simon Ryan, who appeared on TOWIE’s first season, reveals that Sugar Hut was once “a Mayfair club in Essex” and that it had “some very famous clientele.” Sugar Hut had become central to the drama and storylines of TOWIE, and Norcross had built a “fantastic experience” for club-goers. Nonetheless, if the club does not continue as a nightclub, it will be “the end of an era,” according to Ryan. As of now, the Sugar Hut remains owned by Karma Assets Limited, an Essex company managed by Zivile Milusauskaite
