Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been charged with assault following an incident captured on CCTV in Cheshire. The 55-year-old, who has been suspended from the party, was seen punching a 45-year-old man to the ground during an incident on Main Street in Frodsham on 26 October. Amesbury has confirmed he is continuing to cooperate with police but could not comment further due to the ongoing case. He will appear in court at a later date to face charges of common assault.
Cheshire Police investigated the allegation and submitted a file to prosecutors on 29 October. Amesbury volunteered to be interviewed under police caution. The Labour MP won his seat with a majority of 14,696 votes at the general election in July. He served as a shadow minister between 2018 and 2024.
The Crown Prosecution Service has warned people against sharing any information online which could prejudice the case against the defendant. Rosemary Ainslie, a prosecutor, stated that “criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.” Anyone who breaks the law and shares such information might be held in contempt of court.
The date and venue of Amesbury’s first court appearance have not yet been announced. The case continues
