During a hearing in Coventry Crown Court, a man testified that he became involved in conspiracy theories and experienced a “spiral of resentment” while studying for a degree in medical genetics in London. Tai Yasharahyalah, now residing in Birmingham, is accused of causing or permitting the death of his three-year-old son Abiyah. Yasharahyalah and his wife Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah deny the accusations.
The man testified that he began to feel like he needed to “find some sense” in his life while studying in London. Yasharahyalah became more immersed in conspiracy theories and spent most of his time researching online. In 2014, he became vegan and began researching the customs of the Igbo culture, which is found in southeastern Nigeria.
According to Yasharahyalah, his research into the history of his people led him to experience “another spiral of resentment.” He then changed his name and moved to Birmingham, where he eventually met his wife at a music event. The couple intended to have a polyamorous relationship to create a “community of families.”
Mr. Yasharahyalah proposed to “propagate” his culture by moving to London. He met a woman who became his “sister wife” while living there. The couple eventually moved into the Yasharahyalahs’ home in Birmingham. Mrs. Yasharahyalah became pregnant with Abiyah in due course.
The prosecution has alleged that Abiyah died between December 2019 and January 2020, at the age of three years and nine months. Among other charges, the couple is accused of neglecting Abiyah and perverting the course of justice.
The trial of Mr. and Mrs. Yasharahyalah continues
