Girls Aloud to release Sarah Harding's version of I'll Stand By You for Children in Need

I’ll Stand By You, the hit single by Girls Aloud, is to be re-released to mark its 20th anniversary. The charity ballad, which topped the UK chart for two weeks in 2004, will feature the lead vocal of the band’s late member Sarah Harding. The new version of the song will once again raise money for Children In Need. The original version was a fundraising single recorded for the annual telethon.

Harding, who died in September 2021 following complications from breast cancer, sings the lead vocal that was isolated to create the new version. The song became emotional during the Girls Aloud reunion tour, and Sarah’s isolated vocal was found while putting together archive material for the show.

Girls Aloud consists of Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh, Cheryl, and the late Sarah Harding. Coyle stated that the new version of I’ll Stand By You is a “Special celebration of Sarah, and also Girls Aloud’s involvement with Children In Need over the years.” Chrissie Hynde, who originally wrote and performed the song in 1994 as part of her band Pretenders, endorsed the new version.

The song is set to premiere on Wednesday during Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. The single and music video, which features unseen archive footage, will be released on 15 November to coincide with Children in Need appeal show. Meanwhile, ITV will show highlights from the Girls Aloud reunion tour on 17 November, which would have marked Harding’s 43rd birthday. The full concert will be available to stream on ITVX.

The band stated that the song’s new version was an emotional moment for everyone, reflecting the feeling of loss after Harding’s death. Children in Need is a BBC charity that raises money for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. Girls Aloud has been a prominent supporter of the charity over the years, making numerous appearances on fundraising telethons. The original version of I’ll Stand By You reached #1 in the UK charts, becoming Girls Aloud’s fourth #1. The song has been included on many charity compilations and it remains a favorite among fans
