Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden will not be participating in this year’s competition, according to a BBC spokesperson. Dowden was taken to hospital as a “precaution” after feeling unwell during the main show two Saturdays ago. The professional dancer shared on Instagram that she was forced to pull out of the series due to a foot injury. Fellow pro dancer Lauren Oakley will stand in for Dowden and pair with her celebrity partner, JLS singer JB Gill.
However, the spokesperson for the BBC show stated that Dowden will not be returning to focus on her recovery from her injury. The spokesperson added that “The whole Strictly family sends Amy love and well wishes.” Last Saturday, Oakley and Gill performed a Bruno Mars medley which scored 39 points, taking them to the top of the leaderboard jointly with former Love Island star Tasha Ghouri and her dance partner Aljaz Skorjanec.

Dowden shared a post on Instagram following the announcement, stating that her “heart is breaking right now.” She went on to describe how dancing again after cancer was “such a challenge” to get back to the Strictly dancefloor. Dowden appreciated the support of her dance partner JB and expressed sadness that their journey had been cut short. The dancer was initially diagnosed with stage three breast cancer when she was 32 years old. She opened up about her experience in a BBC documentary: Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me.
