The UK’s Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has announced an additional £75m to tackle people-smuggling gangs. This funding raises the total amount allocated to the Border Security Command (BSC) to £150m. The BSC will use this money to establish new tech hubs, expand its staff, and enhance its enforcement, intelligence, and prosecution functions.
At the Interpol general assembly recently held in the UK, Sir Keir re-iterated the importance of firmly combating people-smuggling and border security threats. The summit brought together senior police and ministers from almost 200 member countries of Interpol. The Prime Minister expressed his concern about the severity of this global challenge and called for world leaders to confront the issue seriously.
Sir Keir spoke about his experience as Director of Public Prosecutions, ensuring the seamless cooperation of relevant agencies to address the threats posed by terrorist and drug-smuggling gangs. He stated that security includes strong borders, and that his government is committed to implementing measures to stamp out the heinous activity of people-smuggling.
The Prime Minister believes that adopting a counter-terrorism approach is key to effective border security. He wants to eliminate fragmentation between intelligence agencies, policing, and Border Force. The BSC’s powers will be strengthened through the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, to make detecting, disrupting, and deterring organised crime involved in immigration easier. Additionally, the BSC will work with European counterparts to curb trafficking, protect law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and stop the spread of extremist ideologies.
Sir Keir also announced that the UK will further support Interpol’s operations with £6m to tackle serious organised crime, including drug-related crimes. The Home Office will invest £24m in 2022/2023 to fight transnational organised crime, such as trafficking, firearms, and fraud.
These updates supplement the BSC’s efforts, and boost the work undertaken by the National Crime Agency and Crown Prosecution Service. The government is committed to preventing crime related to people-smuggling by investing in intelligence and law enforcement, legislation and technology. The collaboration with Interpol will focus on detecting, investigating, and disrupting the activities of those who attempt to exploit some of the most vulnerable individuals
