Two young men have been sentenced to prison for supplying MDMA to a group of teenagers, including 16-year-old Lucy Hill who died after taking the drug. James Greaves, 19, was sentenced to three and a half years in a young offender institution and Taylor Rowsell, 18, was handed a two-year sentence. Greaves had emptied prescription pill capsules and refilled them with MDMA before distributing them in different sizes and colours to Rowsell. The teenager had been contacted by a teenage girl requesting drugs but had no supplies, so called Greaves who had drug supply links to Devon.
The court heard that Ms Hill and her friends had taken a taxi into Exeter from her home in Exmouth to go to the Move nightclub, where, despite there being no alcohol available, they all took the pills and became ill. Club staff took Ms Hill outside and called an ambulance but she died in December 2022. Rowsell was acting out of “simple greed for money” that was “greater than your concern for any customer”. He was selling 35 tablets that night and intended to sell many more.
The court heard that Lucy Hill died because the two men sold her drugs, despite their concerns about the dosage. Their greed was greater than their concern for any customer, said the judge. Detective Inspector Sally Johns from Devon and Cornwall Police called upon people to reconsider taking drugs as the substances can kill many times in tragic cases such as this.
The teenager’s death weighed heavily on both Greaves and Rowsell, according to their defense barristers. Ms Hill’s mother Deborah Hill told the court her daughter was kind and caring and they “lives will never be the same again”.” Her family called her the “perfect angel”.
