Gabriel Sebastian was born on 2 June 2023 with a rare genetic condition, and since then, his parents have not left his side. Gabriel’s health is so precarious that he has spent all 17 months of his life in the Edinburgh hospital where he was born. His parents, originally from Kerala, India, haven’t spent a night in their own home since the birth of their son. The couple has their own room within the hospital and is preparing to spend their second Christmas there.
When Teena Thomas, Gabriel’s mother, was five months pregnant, a scan revealed that Gabriel had Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia, a genetic condition so rare, and it was impossible to predict how it would shape his life. His bones were barely developed, his arms and legs were too short, and he would be short, with facial abnormalities and maybe brittle bones. His parents were given the choice to terminate the pregnancy.
Gabriel’s parents prepared for the worst but clung to hope since one of the scans showed him sucking his thumb, which indicated that his bones had some strength. The couple bought a Moses basket and decorated his room, thinking they would be out of the hospital in just five days.
Gabriel was born via cesarean section and was immediately intubated and taken to intensive care. From then onwards, Gabriel’s parents have spent every moment at their son’s side. Gabriel is unable to breathe unaided, so he had to undergo major surgery to provide him with an alternative airway for breathing. Though Gabriel endured endless tests, X-rays, and scans, he always came back smiling.
Gabriel’s future remains uncertain, and doctors do not know if he will ever breathe on his own, speak, or eat. Recently they discovered that his brain is shrinking. Gabriel’s parents are grateful for the extraordinary NHS teams at the hospital and have spent a total of 17 months in the hospital, with no possibility of going home for Christmas. However, the family has been invited to turn on the Christmas lights at the hospital at the end of this month
