David Gilliver, a Scottish photographer, has been shortlisted for this year’s British Photography Awards in the best low light photograph category. Gilliver has been pioneering light painting techniques for over 15 years, creating colourful and imaginative images for his portfolio. One of his most recent pieces, “Where Rainbows Sleep”, features a rainbow-coloured trail of light leading into a fishing hut.
Light painting involves using long exposure photography techniques to capture the path of handheld lights into the final image. To create his award-nominated photo, Gilliver stands dressed in dark clothing in a pitch-black fishing boat hut, wielding a “light sabre” to create the trail of light leading into the hatch above. Once he reaches the camera at the other end of the room, he manually triggers the flash gun to illuminate the surrounding area.
In addition to his light painting work, Gilliver also has experience with macro photography, capturing close-up images of small objects, flowers, and insects. He often uses imaginative scenarios and small figurines to create the final image. Last year, Gilliver won the best macro photograph category of the British Photography Awards for his Covid pandemic-inspired piece, “Masking the Problem”.
While he has been shortlisted for three categories in this year’s British Photography Awards, Gilliver says he doesn’t have a preference between macro and light painting photography, as they both offer unique experiences. He now teaches workshops across the UK, sharing his creativity and passion for light painting with others.
The British Photography Awards ceremony is set to take place on November 4th of this year
