Albion Rovers – The fan managing the Lowland League team against Hearts B

Albion Rovers, the 142-year-old Scottish football club, is set to be managed for a day by avowed football fanatic Duncan McKay, a supporter of Hibernian, and an A View from the Terrace presenter this weekend during the Lowland League match against Hearts B. McKay’s fluency in computer game, Football Manager, is putting his experience to test, as he swaps the stands for the dugout to take part in a fully-fledged game with three points on the line. McKay is yet to discuss tactics with Sandy Clark, a stalwart of the game who is Albion Rovers’ regular manager.

This could be a first of its kind, with a fan with no managerial experience calling the shots from the dugout. McKay’s exploits include being a mascot at Stark’s Park, playing in goal for John O’Groats in the Netherlands, and contributing to a Challenge Cup draw with David Gray. McKay commented on the opportunity: “In one way, it’s thrilling, in the other, it’s terrifying.” McKay and Clark’s team are still to share tactics, as the segment aims for authenticity and experiences everything as it goes along.

The club and Sandy Clark have endorsed this move to allow McKay the opportunity to bring his computer game experience to life in one of the most vibrant fixtures of Scottish football. Albion Rovers dropped down to the Lowland League two seasons ago, and after being relegated following a play-off defeat by the Spartans. McKay, who has limited time to scout the team, will be guided by Sandy Clark. McKay said, “I’d like to think I’ll be a little guided by Sandy in case I inadvertently put a right back up front or a striker in goals. Hopefully, I don’t do too much damage to their reputation.”

Ben Kearney, a club spokesman at Albion Rovers, said: “Everyone at Albion Rovers is delighted to welcome Duncan to our experienced management team for this weekend’s fixture. We have full faith that he can handle the step up to our management team.” Sandy Clark, who has over 30 years of coaching experience in the Scottish game, will be present to keep McKay on the right track. Fans of the show A View From the Terrace plan to attend the Albion Rovers match to cheer on McKay. The match will reveal what McKay has to offer as a manager, and if he is ready to move into management
