Watford man jailed over Wagner Group boast at Viking event


A man from Watford has been handed a sentence of two-and-a-half years in jail for brandishing a knife at a Viking re-enactment event whilst claiming to have fought for proscribed terror group the Wagner Group in Ukraine. Piotr Kucharski, a 49-year-old builder, donned combat clothing and badges with the Russian mercenary group’s insignia whilst becoming increasingly aggressive, waving a dagger, and making a throat-slitting gesture on 28 October 2022. Kucharski was arrested following the incident, and also admitted to posting related claims on Facebook and messaging his contacts about them.

Kucharski pleaded guilty to professing to be a member of a banned terrorist organisation before being handed his sentence by the Old Bailey in London on Friday. The Wagner Group was placed on the UK’s list of proscribed terror organisations in September 2023, a decision that saw it become a criminal offence to support the group in any way within the UK.
