The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, has reportedly been cut off financially by his brother, King Charles, according to a new biography of the King by royal author Robert Hardman. The decision means that the King will no longer pay for Prince Andrew’s security at his home, Royal Lodge, or provide him with a personal allowance. The costs of these two items are thought to run into the millions of pounds per year. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the book’s claims, which were serialised by the Daily Mail.
The claim about Prince Andrew’s funding being stopped comes after he has been under financial pressure over the cost of running Royal Lodge, a 30-room home in Windsor, which he shares with his ex-wife, Sarah. However, it had already been reported by the BBC that the King was not willing to subsidise Prince Andrew indefinitely. Reports suggested that it was part of a longer-term question about settling Prince Andrew’s future accommodation and finances.
Instead of Royal Lodge, where the Queen Mother previously lived, some experts had suggested that Prince Andrew could move to Frogmore Cottage, which had been occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan. Frogmore Cottage would have a much lower maintenance and security cost than Royal Lodge, but it is at the monarch’s discretion. Prince Andrew has a personal lease on Royal Lodge that lasts until 2078 and he had paid upfront for the repairs and maintenance cost when he took on the lease in 2003.
This financial pressure on the Prince follows the release of two films, produced by Netflix and Amazon, about Prince Andrew’s interview on BBC Newsnight in 2019, in which he was questioned about his association with US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. After the interview, Prince Andrew stepped down as a working royal, lost his military titles and royal patronages, and started living a private life at Royal Lodge. Experts have said that the loss of funding suggests a final decision taken by King Charles to stop the allowance and security funding for Prince Andrew
