Portsmouth City Council among UK authorities hit by cyber attack

In a string of cyber attacks against several United Kingdom (UK) local authorities, Portsmouth City Council is the latest to be hit by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The anonymous hacker group calling itself NoName057(16) has claimed responsibility for the cyber attacks affecting the cities of Salford and Middlesbrough among other locations, suggesting that this could be politically motivated. The hackers are suspected to have pro-Russian tendencies.

Amid the ongoing attack, Portsmouth City Council assured its residents that no council services are affected, and the online data of its users are not at risk. A statement issued by the council read, “Portsmouth is one of a number of local authorities across the UK to be affected by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack by a group named NoName057(16). No council services are affected by the attack, and user and residents’ data are not at risk, however, the website may be for an unknown period. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

While several councils have faced similar issues over the past week, Salford, Bury, and Trafford councils confirmed that their websites were temporarily affected but have now resumed their online operations. Middlesbrough Council’s site was disconnected temporarily on Wednesday after its IT team identified a potential issue.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has responded to these cyber incidents and provided necessary guidance to the affected councils. The centre has also reminded organisations that DDoS attacks could disrupt legal users’ access to online services. It is suggested that organisations should regularly review their systems and have contingency plans in place in the event of cyber disruption.

The rise in cyber incidents on local authorities is a disturbing trend, potentially causing inconvenience and economic disruption. Authorities must focus on enhancing their cybersecurity with robust contingency plans and enhanced security training and systems
