Elliot Caswell, a young man with cerebral palsy, has secured a modelling job after appearing in a BBC documentary discussing his struggles to find work. Primark’s senior art director saw Elliot’s story and decided he would be perfect for a new clothing range. The art director contacted Elliot through a modelling agency and offered him a modelling job. Elliot, who was previously struggling to find employment, was excited and nervous to accept the opportunity.
BBC video journalist Rachel Price spent five years filming Elliot’s life and created a documentary called “A Life of My Own” showcasing his challenges. Her work caught the attention of the BBC and indirectly helped get Elliot the job. Elliot travelled to Manchester for a two-day shoot for the clothing range. During the shoot, Rachel was present and noted how much Elliot had progressed since she met him five years ago.
Elliot’s mum, Chris Caswell, said the skills required for modelling were ideal for Elliot as he could use his personality. She added that “Elliot has some limitations, but he has so much to give……he has fantastic skills, but just needs a little bit of support to get a job.” Photographer Esmé Moore, who also has cerebral palsy, commented on Elliot’s character saying that it was surprising that it was his first shoot, and that people with a lot of character are easy to photograph.
Charlie Magadah-Williams, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Primark, said that the company was looking for a variety of models for their recent shoot, and Elliot was an excellent fit. She added that Primark is committed to becoming more accessible for their employees and customers. Elliot dreams of a job that is customer facing, and his ideal job would be working for Newcastle United, the football team he supports.
