Burntwood daughter fears for parents missing in Valencia floods


After Tuesday’s devastating flooding in Valencia, a daughter is left fearful for the safety of her parents who have been missing since the natural disaster occurred. Ruth O’Loughlin, living in Burntwood, Staffordshire, spoke to both of her parents, Don Turner (78) and Terry Turner (74), on Monday this week. Since the flash flooding and torrential rain hit, neither neighbours nor friends have seen or heard from them since.

“Friends had nipped up there because they hadn’t heard from mum and dad, the key was in the door, they could get into the property, the dogs were there and the car’s gone so they know that mum and dad haven’t gone back,” Ruth explained in her plea to the public. As a result, she is desperate for news and fretful for her parents as they have left their animals back at home.

The “lovely friends around them” couple, both retired, moved to Spain about 10 years ago in pursuit of living in the sunshine. Despite their fondness for Spain, they were considering moving back to the UK as they were getting older. According to Ruth, her mother had always been passionate about animals. She took care of dogs and cats and volunteered at a local rescue centre. She would do anything to get back to them, her daughter said.

Ruth’s parents are among the 200 fatalities in the recent flooding, according to the Spanish authorities. However, the bridge collapse in their area has left their friends trapped on the island where the couple lived. Ruth’s sister and herself are considering traveling to Spain soon to assist in the search effort for their parents.
