The bride who crowd-surfed to Biffy Clyro on her wedding night

Carla Hester wanted something different for her wedding day. The 41-year-old bride from Lincolnshire was planning to marry James, 34, and knew that she didn’t want a traditional wedding. The couple met on an online fan site for the Scottish band Biffy Clyro and bonded over their shared love of music and collecting vinyl. So when Biffy Clyro announced the appropriately-named Celebration of Beginnings tour, including three nights at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow, the couple thought it would be the perfect wedding reception.

Carla spent the days leading up to her big day camped outside the venue with friends, hoping to secure a spot at the front. When she finally secured the prized front and center spot, she held up a sign reading “I’m getting married tomorrow”. Instead of walking down the aisle, she crowd-surfed in her wedding dress to the music of Biffy Clyro. Fellow fans lifted the bride into the air during the band’s performance of “There’s No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake.”

“I made a post on the Biffy appreciation group that I was disappointed I wouldn’t be able to get the new Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes vinyl because I was working,” Carla said. “James messaged asking for my address – he had already bought it for me.” The couple’s honeymoon in Milan continues their celebration of music. They will see Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes in concert.

Carla and James’s wedding has become something of a legend among Biffy Clyro fans. Other fans had already heard about Carla’s “daft idea” of crowd-surfing and encouraged her to carry out her plans. The couple held their ceremony in Glasgow city center with friends and family who had traveled from England for the big day. Ahead of the third and final Biffy Clyro show, the couple went to Saint Lukes & the Winged Ox, meeting up with fellow Biffy Clyro fans. “It was perfect, it was so chilled out. We generally meet up at gigs, we’re just one big Biffy family really,” Carla said.

Carla’s quirky nuptials show the lengths people will go to celebrate the things they love. Some might shy away from incorporating their fandom into their special day, but Carla embraced it wholeheartedly. Her story is a reminder that love can be found in unexpected places and that there’s no single path to happiness
