The real-life ‘exorcist’ who investigates the supernatural

The Very Reverend Canon Dr Jason Bray is a priest in the Anglican church and also serves as the Dean of Llandaff Cathedral. In addition to his more traditional duties, he is also a deliverance minister – an exorcist. Dr Bray recently spoke with BBC News about his work and the paranormal cases he investigates.

Dr Bray is one of four deliverance ministers in Cardiff who are called upon to investigate reports of paranormal activity on behalf of the Church in Wales. He explains that he deals with cases of “haunted houses” and poltergeist activity, where spirits may move furniture or cause objects to fall or disappear. While the cases he encounters can be frightening, he maintains a calm and gentle approach, often offering reassurance rather than attempting an exorcism.

While some may dismiss reports of the paranormal as superstition or nonsense, Dr Bray takes it seriously. He believes that there are often rational explanations for such occurrences, but there are also cases where the supernatural is the most plausible explanation. The deliverance ministers are trained through a programme shared with the Church of England and work with healthcare professionals and safeguarding officers to ensure that they are providing the most appropriate response to the cases they investigate.

Dr Bray’s interest in deliverance began 27 years ago when he and his wife moved into a new home and noticed unusual cold spots and drafts in certain areas of the house. Later on, he experienced a frightening presence in the bathroom in the middle of the night. He turned to the local vicar for help, who performed prayers and blessed the home with holy water, returning it to a peaceful state.

Despite the sometimes-unusual nature of his work, Dr Bray takes his role seriously as a deliverance minister. He seeks to provide comfort and solutions to those who may be experiencing frightening or unexplained phenomena in their homes, and works closely with other professionals to ensure that the best possible care is provided to those in need
