A group of individuals attacking police vehicles and buses with fireworks and missiles has caused disorder in the Hay Avenue area of Niddrie, Edinburgh. Riot control officers have been summoned to control the residential area. The public has been recommended not to enter the zone. Lothian Buses has had to pull at least nine bus services from operating due to the anti-social conduct being carried out in the area. A spokesman from the bus company has reported that they adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards anti-social behavior, and the welfare of their employees and customers is their top priority.
Similar circumstances occurred last year in different areas of Edinburgh, near Sighthill and Southhouse, where young people were involved in clashes with authorities, throwing fireworks and petrol bombs at riot officers. The events in the Niddrie area have occurred just a few hours before a ban on fireworks in certain sections of Edinburgh, including Niddrie, comes into effect. The ban will be enforced from 1 to 10 November, and anyone who sets off a private firework during this time will be prosecuted under criminal law.
The ban is the result of newly granted powers to Scottish local authorities by the Scottish government to create firework control zones in the country, following a major disturbance in Dundee. Edinburgh City Council implemented the measures by approving a motion in August of this year, becoming the first in Scotland to do so. The council has chosen not to have a zone covering the whole of Edinburgh, and as such, private firework displays will only be allowed when conducted as a component of a public event authorized by a specified body.
Police officers are being helped to keep the situation under control and bring more peace to the area quickly. The attack underscores a regrettable development in urban areas that has alarmed citizens, businesses, and authorities alike. Such events can lead to injuries, destruction of property and jeopardize the authority of the state. Police and authorities need to maintain a strong presence and carefully handle all situations to ensure overall law and stability
