Police have confirmed that a “significant fire” broke out at the BAE Systems nuclear submarine shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. The UK’s nuclear submarines are constructed at the site and emergency services were called to the facility in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Two people were taken to hospital suffering from suspected smoke inhalation, but police confirmed there was “no nuclear risk”.
Local residents were advised to remain indoors and keep doors and windows closed during the incident, while a road closure was implemented at the nearby Michaelson Bridge. The site’s main building facility, the Devonshire Dock Hall – one of the largest indoor shipbuilding complexes in Europe – was fully evacuated and everyone inside was accounted for.
The hall has been responsible for the construction of the UK’s Trident nuclear programme, consisting of four Vanguard Class submarines. The incident is still ongoing and further updates are expected.
