Eden Project Morecambe to go ahead with £50m from Labour

The UK government has pledged to provide full funding for the Eden Project Morecambe, a planned eco-visitor attraction located next to Morecambe Bay in Lancashire. The project was promised £50m from the previous government’s Levelling Up fund, but Labour had not yet committed to it. Labour MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale Lizzi Collinge has confirmed that the £50m “is in the bag and Eden Project Morecambe is going ahead”, adding that it will create 1,400 local jobs and attract around one million visitors every year to the town.

The transformational project, set to be completed in 2027 or 2028, has been described as a “global garden” and will feature large shell-shaped pavilions overlooking Morecambe Bay. Paperwork between project partners, Lancashire County Council and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is expected to be signed off in the coming weeks, according to Collinge, while the project’s director of transformation, Si Bellamy, has confirmed that the final business plan was submitted at the end of August.

Eden Project Morecambe will be a sister site to the original Eden Project in Cornwall and aims to breathe new life into the area after many years of neglect. Collinge has stressed that the project represents “a transformation for Morecambe”, which had been “left behind for years”. The attraction is expected to help regenerate the town and become a major draw for visitors, with the promise of a unique and innovative visitor experience set to boost the local economy.

The UK Government’s commitment to the project will provide much-needed reassurance to the local community, who have been waiting for further developments since the announcement of the funding last year. The Eden Project Morecambe is set to become an important site for eco-tourism, showcasing the importance and beauty of sustainable living and green innovation. With the government’s support, the project has the potential to transform the area and create a legacy that will be felt for generations to come.
