PM 'shocked' by CCTV appearing to show Mike Amesbury MP punch man

Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the party after CCTV footage emerged that appears to show him punching a man to the ground. The video footage has been described as “shocking” by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Sir Keir Starmer has said that the party responded swiftly and that there is now a police investigation. The man that was allegedly punched has been voluntarily interviewed under caution in relation to the incident.

In the footage, Amesbury is seen hitting the man as he lies in the street. The MP has also been accused of shouting and swearing at the same man in a different video that has been posted online. The incident is said to have taken place in Frodsham, Cheshire.

Amesbury was first elected to the House of Commons in 2010 and represents Runcorn and Helsby. He was re-elected in July 2023 with a majority of 14,696. He is a former shadow housing minister and is a member of two Commons committees, the Housing Communities and Local Government Committee and the Modernisation Committee. In 2023, a 56-year-old man was found guilty of stalking and harassing Amesbury at his constituency office and in town.

The Manchester-born MP has worked with Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Greater Manchester Metro Mayor Andy Burnham. He is yet to comment on the alleged incident
