An actress, Katherine Amess, who is also the daughter of the murdered Conservative MP, Sir David Amess, has demanded a full inquest into the circumstances surrounding her father’s death. In an interview with The Sunday Times, she expressed her concerns about the lack of information surrounding the incident and the need to prevent a similar occurrence in the future. Sir David was stabbed to death on October 15, 2021, while holding a surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Ali Harbi Ali was later sentenced to life in prison for the crime.
Although an inquest was opened by Coroner Lincoln Brookes, Katherine insists that a full public examination into the events leading up to her father’s death has not been conducted. She believes that everyone should have access to information about how the incident happened, and that this knowledge could prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Katherine also stated that the family and society still lack pertinent information on the matter.
Katherine has gone ahead to file legal action against the police and the Home Office. In December, she filed a personal injury claim against the two authorities, citing her horror at the incident and her desire to learn from it. Essex Police and the Home Office have both acknowledged the legal action.
Katherine’s father was commended for his effort in providing a solution to the world’s problems. An inspiration to many, a service of remembrance was held earlier this month at St Peter’s Catholic Church, which was near to the scene of his murder.
