Fireworks: How to keep pets safe over fireworks season

As the festive season approaches, fireworks displays are becoming more and more common. While humans may enjoy the bright lights and loud noises, pets can often be left feeling anxious and scared. To ensure the safety and comfort of your furry friends, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has shared five helpful tips.

Firstly, it’s important to keep your pets indoors when you know there will be fireworks going off. Create a comfortable and secure environment for them, with soft bedding and toys to keep them occupied. You could even try playing soothing music or leaving the TV on to help distract them from the noise outside.

It’s also important to ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed and locked, to prevent your pets from running away or getting injured. If your pet is particularly anxious, you may want to consider speaking to your vet about medication or natural remedies to help calm them down.

Make sure your pet is well-exercised and has used the toilet before the fireworks start, as it’s better for them to be relaxed and comfortable beforehand. If you do need to take them outside during the fireworks, make sure they are on a lead or in a secure carrier.

Finally, be patient and understanding with your pets. Give them plenty of love, reassurance and attention during this stressful time. With a little preparation and care, you can help your pets to feel safe and secure during the festive fireworks season
