Thousands of gaming and comic enthusiasts descended on London’s ExCeL centre on the weekend for MCM X EGX, the UK’s biggest gaming, comic, and pop culture convention. Attendees donned an array of colourful costumes, many of which were designed and created by themselves. The event merged with Comic Con for the first time this year, giving attendees access to more activities, including lightsaber battles, card game sessions, and costume contests. The merged event also attracted over 700 panellists, with more than 450 exhibitors demonstrating products and selling merchandise.
MCM X EGX offered fans a glimpse into upcoming projects in gaming, comics, and films across various stages dotted throughout the two halls of the expo. In addition, fans could preview various new releases, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the latest instalment of the popular first-person shooter series. Obsidian Entertainment also provided fans with a preview of Avowed, an expansive fantasy role-playing game due for release in February next year. Smaller-scale projects were also showcased at the event, such as Jazzhands, a gesture-controlled game developed by two University of Nottingham students during a 24-hour programming competition.
More than 100,000 people attended the event, travelling from across the UK and beyond. Despite the turnout, the gaming industry has struggled in recent years with several leading brands pulling out of the expo due to job cuts and an industry strike hitting US development schedules. However, MCM X EGX aimed to keep the gaming expo alive by joining forces with Comic Con to attract a bigger audience for the publishers who participated.
Many fans noted that their favourite part of the event was meeting other people who shared their passion for comics and gaming. As one attendee put it, “By the end of the day, you’ll be sad it’s all over – you’ll have the ‘con blues’!”. The event showcased several themed areas, with stalls promoting favourites such as Batman and Captain America, as well as hosting interactive sessions instructed by experts, such as martial artists that taught swordsmanship to attendees.
The organisers of the event told the media that they were overwhelmed by the turnout, and that they were pleased that the merger of MCM X EGX and Comic Con had been a success. The event continues to serve as a platform for gamers, fans, and industry enthusiasts to come together and celebrate their shared passions
