Labour MP Mike Amesbury filmed in heated exchange as assault reported

An MP from the Labour Party, Mike Amesbury, has been caught on camera appearing to shout and swear at a man lying on the pavement during an altercation in Cheshire. The footage shows the Runcorn and Helsby member pointing to the individual and saying “you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?” The incident reportedly occurred in Frodsham town centre in the early hours of Saturday. The circumstances leading up to the altercation are not clear from the video.

Cheshire Police, who were called to the scene following reports of an assault, are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Following the altercation, Amesbury contacted the police to report the incident himself and has stated that he will cooperate with any enquiries. It is not yet known whether the MP will face any charges in relation to the incident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Labour Party confirmed they were aware of the altercation but declined to comment further on the matter. Amesbury himself has not made any additional comments on the altercation, instead releasing a statement via social media stating that he felt threatened following an evening out with friends and that he had contacted the police himself to report what happened.

Amesbury has been an MP for Cheshire since 2017 and was a shadow minister for local government when the Labour Party was in opposition. In 2023, he was stalked and harassed by a 56-year-old man who was subsequently convicted. At the time, Amesbury stated that the incident had left him feeling “that little bit more anxious.”
