A rave at a Nottingham chippy – 'a night to remember'

Nottingham’s Lace Market Fish Bar was transformed into a one-night rave venue on Wednesday night, attracting hundreds of music fans. Despite typically serving fish and chips, kebabs, and burgers, the chippy hosted local grime and garage MC Window Kid and British DJ Nathan Dawe. The floor shook as the rave spilled onto the streets, and staff said that people could not wait for the next one.

Window Kid, known to friends as Greg, has been a regular customer of the Lace Market Fish Bar for years and said, “It’s my local chippy, and we thought it was a place where everyone’s welcome.” With 24 hours’ notice, the micro-rave sold 35 tickets, but hundreds more attended, the MC said. He added, “It couldn’t have gone any better. Everyone was just loving life and it was bang on.”

While the 30-year-old MC was no stranger to a crowd, staff members Dorina Gjoshi and Sam Abbas experienced a night like no other at the fish bar. “I was here serving drinks, and the floor was actually shaking,” Ms Gjoshi said. “We’ve had quite special occasions like the playoffs and hockey finals, but not like this. It was a great night – something to remember.” Mr Abbas, 43, called it “an amazing night” and noted that people were already asking about doing it “one more time” after New Year’s.

Although the Lace Market Fish Bar’s impromptu rave may have come as a surprise to some, it is part of a growing trend of unconventional venues hosting raves and other events. With the coronavirus pandemic limiting gathering options, people have become more creative and flexible in finding alternative ways to enjoy music and socialize safely. For Window Kid, the success of the event showed that “you don’t have to have a fancy nightclub to have a good party.
