The Metropolitan Police is reopening an investigation into the Wimbledon school crash that occurred last summer. During the incident, a Land Rover drove into the playground of the Study Prep school, resulting in two children’s deaths and injuries to 12 others. After the initial investigation, the driver, Claire Freemantle, was informed that no further action would be taken against her. The families of the two girls who passed away, Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad, expressed their dissatisfaction with the first police investigation.
Following the first investigation, the driver was not charged due to having an epileptic seizure, according to families who spoke with the Crown Prosecution Service. Ms Freemantle expressed sorrow publicly, claiming to have no recollection of what happened. The families of the girls who died remained unconvinced that the police investigation was conducted thoroughly. Senior Metropolitan Police officers have now chosen to open a new investigation into the accident, prompted by an internal review conducted four months later.
The police department stated that several lines of inquiry necessitated additional scrutiny, prompting them to reopen the investigation. As such, it will be conducted by an accredited senior investigating officer with homicide investigation expertise. The families of the children who died welcomed the new inquiry. Selena Lau’s father, Franky Lau, remarked that all he ever wanted was an open and thorough examination of the accident, which turned the lives of Selena, Nuria, and other families involved upside down on a summer afternoon.
The families of the victims will be updated as the investigation proceeds. The police department stated that they recognise the difficulty faced by the grieving families and stated that they are working toward resolving all concerns and questions raised. They want to ensure that the investigation addresses all questions raised by the families
