Merseyside Police have arrested a 12-year-old boy in connection with the stabbing of a teenage girl in Norris Green Park, Liverpool. The 14-year-old girl sustained multiple puncture wounds in the buttocks and leg following a dispute with a group of boys on Tuesday. She was taken to a hospital where her condition is stable, according to the police.
The suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday and was released on conditional bail while the investigation progresses. Detective Inspector Steve Street called on anyone who witnessed the altercation to come forward and assist the police with their inquiries. He condemned the use of weapons in the attack and urged parents and guardians to educate their children on the dangers of knife crime.
Knife-related incidents continue to cause concern across the UK. Figures released by the Ministry of Justice showed the number of people sentenced for possession of a knife or sharp object in England and Wales in the year to March 2021 has risen to its highest level in a decade. The offences rose by 30% compared to the previous year, with the most common age of offenders being between 18 and 20.
The rise in knife-related crime has prompted the government to adopt measures to combat it. Home Secretary Priti Patel has called for tougher sentences for those involved in knife crime, while police forces have stepped up their efforts in fighting the problem
