Wales train crash passenger who died named locally as Tudor Evans

A man who died as a result of a train collision in mid Wales has been identified as Tudor Evans. Evans was in his 60s and hailed from the Aberystwyth area of Ceredigion. Four others suffered serious injuries in the incident near Llanbrynmair in Powys on Monday evening, with a further 11 requiring treatment in hospital. Transport for Wales stated that a full report on the crash would take several months to process.

The Rail Accident Investigations Branch (RAIB) carried out a preliminary examination and discovered that the train may have experienced wheel slide upon braking. Evans had been travelling on the 18:31 westbound service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth when it hit a stationary train travelling from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. The collision is believed to have occurred at a rate of around 24 km/h (15mph).

The British Transport Police confirmed that it did not consider Evans’s death to have been a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner offered her condolences to those affected by Monday’s incident during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, with several other politicians echoing her message.
