A beachgoer and her dog survived by a whisker after a cliff collapsed on a group of huts in Bournemouth, Dorset. The incident was captured on video on Saturday, showing the woman and her dog sitting at the beach hut when the landslide occurred. The video revealed the hut being thrown forward several meters as the woman ran away from it. Earlier, 14 Durley Chine beach huts had been hit, including one that collapsed, forcing the area to be cordoned off. The council fenced off the area after a previous cliff collapse on 9 October.
Natalie Carr, who brought the adjacent hut last year, claimed her hut was ruined. She said the site had never had issues with landslides in the past. “My worry is that it’s potentially the end of an era. Maybe people won’t want to have a beach hut down here if they’re at risk. Who wants to enjoy their beach hut day and get potentially thrown over by a landslide? It is a huge worry,” Carr revealed. Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council said the status of the area would be updated after an assessment had been made.

Recent times have seen coastline retreat and landslides, which could cause difficulties for seaside property owners. Some have worried that authorities have not done enough to curb potentially hazardous areas besides the sea as climate change further increases the chances of such incidents happening. In the end, some also think that the council needs to do more to ensure seaside residences’ safety and longevity so that people can continue to enjoy spending time by the sea without any concerns
