Following a suspected vehicle sighting on the premises, Birmingham Airport had to evacuate its terminal causing delays for travellers. Numerous flights were grounded, and people were told to leave the airport building whilst police sources launched an investigation at around 12:20 BST. The event disrupted passengers who were in the midst of checking their flights, with an enclosed police cordon around the airport, and advised against travelling to the airport until further notice.
The West Midlands Police force reported, “We have safely checked a suspicious vehicle outside Birmingham Airport and it has been deemed safe. The cordon has been lifted and the airport is slowly returning to normal.” The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) responsible for investigating the matter found it to contain no harmful elements.
An airport representative apologised for the inconvenience caused by the situation, saying, “The safety and security of everyone at the airport was our number one priority as we worked through this incident with police partners.” The BBC reports that passengers that had cleared security were permitted to remain, whilst further inspections of the airport continued.
Although Birmingham Airport has stated that most of the flights that were held on the ground have now departed, some disruption is expected. Passengers have been advised to check flight status updates with their airline.
