Cardiff Crown Court has heard the first group of defendants charged with rioting in connection with the 2023 disorder that took place in Ely, South Wales. Twenty-seven people have been charged with rioting, which began after two boys, Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, died in a bike crash. Fifteen other defendants have been charged with denying riot. Four of the defendants had been charged with causing or threatening to cause criminal damage, and all defendants will next appear in court on 1 November.
The first group of five defendants have appeared before the court, pleading guilty and not guilty to the charges. Kyle Telemaque, 19, admitted the riot charge and two separate charges related to supplying cannabis. Jumana Fouad, 18, who was charged with the offence shortly after her 18th birthday, also pleaded guilty. Callum O’Sullivan, 23, and McKenzie Danks, 21, attended court as well. McKenzie pleaded guilty to the assault of two police officers while denying rioting.
The disorder saw property damaged, cars torched, and 15 police officers injured. Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, were killed in the bike accident, which resulted in crowds of about 100 to 150 people gathering in the area shortly thereafter. Twenty-seven people have been charged with rioting in connection with the case, and 15 others have denied the charges.
There are no trial dates set for the case, and all defendants will next appear in court on 1 November. It is not yet known when the trial will take place, but Cardiff Crown Court is making all necessary preparations for the case and ensuring that it moves forward as quickly as possible
