Team New Zealand have retained the America’s Cup title by beating Great Britain in the 37th edition of the event in Barcelona. British captain, Ben Ainslie’s Ineos Britannia team, was down 6-2 going into Saturday’s racing and required a win in race 9 to stay in the best-of-13 series. The British boat applied some pressure but was unable to thwart Team New Zealand as they secured a 37-second victory to take an unassailable 7-2 lead.
This win makes New Zealand the first team to lift the Auld Mug on three consecutive occasions since the USA did so from 1987-1992. While Great Britain, who has never won the trophy in the competition’s 173-year history, was appearing for the first time in the final since 1964.
Ainslie congratulated the Kiwis on their amazing campaign and team, calling them the best team ever in the America’s Cup. He went on to express how proud he was of his team. Despite not winning the competition, they had their moments in the finals, but at the end of the day, the better team won.
However, Ainslie also told reporters that this wasn’t the end for his team, and they would continue their pursuit to win the America’s Cup. He noted that they set out ten years ago to win it and are getting closer each time, with the trick being to keep going till they achieve their goal.
Overall, it was a great race between the two teams, and once again, Team New Zealand demonstrated why they are one of the most dominant forces in the America’s Cup history, while the British team showed a lot of promise and potential, giving fans hope for a possible future British win
