Brecon: Soldier Christopher Gill dies in non-operational incident

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the death of a soldier during a “non-operational incident”. Corporal Christopher Gill of the 4th Battalion, The Rangers Regiment, passed away on the 16th of October in Brecon, Powys. Cpl Gill, known as “Gilly”, was highly respected for his experience as an Army Special Operations soldier who assisted in training fighters in Afghanistan, as well as Ukrainian soldiers in the UK. The MoD gave no further information on the cause of his death.

Lt Col Charles Bairsto, commanding officer of the 4th Battalion, The Ranger Regiment, praised Cpl Gill as “a strong and natural leader” who “left him held in the highest regard” and dedicated to his family. Cpl Gill, who joined the British Army in 2011, had been deployed to Helmand Province in Afghanistan before serving in Belize, the US, Kenya, and Morocco. In 2021, he volunteered for Army Special Operations and was “quick to volunteer to train Ukrainian soldiers in the UK”.

The British Army’s base at Brecon is used by the Infantry Battle School (IBS) to train officers and soldiers, according to the Army’s website. It offers command and leadership training, infantry tactics training, weapons training, live firing range qualifications, and “specialist training teams to assist foreign forces in their development”. Meanwhile, Cpl Gill’s family, friends, and fellow Rangers mourn the loss of a “much-loved and respected leader” and the Army grieves the passing of “a professional, capable, and loyal special operations soldier whose contribution to the team made it much stronger than the sum of its parts”.

The sad news of Cpl Gill’s death has touched many, especially in the military community where he was widely respected. The British Army, along with his family and friends, mourns the loss of a brave soldier who served his country with dedication and commitment, leaving behind a legacy of excellence
