A dental practice in Norwich, UK was overwhelmed with enquiries in just a few hours after opening its books for NHS patients. Friends Dental Practice, which already had 3,000 patients signed up, received more than 16,000 inquiries after announcing it was taking on new patients. While the surgery can only accommodate between 200 and 250 patients, it prioritised children on its list for treatment. The practice’s Georgina Rowe noted that limited funding was a concern for the facility but that it was still exploring options with the NHS.
The high level of demand for NHS dental services in Norwich and the surrounding area prompted Adrian Ramsay, MP for Waveney Valley, to ask the Prime Minister about when negotiations to reform dental services would take place. Ramsay observed that approximately 99% of those who sought treatment in the east of England were unable to find an NHS dentist. Wes Streeting, the UK’s Health Secretary, has also described the region as a “dental desert”.
The surprisingly high level of demand for the Friends Dental Practice was described as “no surprise” by Rowe, who has worked at the surgery for three years. She had expected the practice to be popular among those who had, until then, been unable to find an NHS dental provider. Dr Alb Torrado-Varela, a dentist who has worked in the UK for the past 14 years, commented that the level of demand for dental services had risen significantly in recent times.
The NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board noted that the issue of demand for dental treatment was not confined to the Norwich area; additional funding of £7 million is being allocated across the country to support patient accessibility and treatment. This funding aims to establish child-focused dental care centres, provide improved treatment options for patients, maintain the urgent treatment service, and recruit and retain dental care staff.
