The sudden and tragic death of former One Direction star Liam Payne in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has left fans and loved ones devastated. Payne, 31, died on Wednesday after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur hotel in the upmarket neighbourhood of Palermo. While many details regarding the circumstances of his death remain unclear, information from emergency services and other authorities has begun to piece together a timeline of events.
At the time of his death, Payne had been in Argentina to visit his former bandmate Niall Horan, who was on tour in the country. Payne had posted on Snapchat that he was visiting Horan for a catch-up, saying: “It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken, we’ve got a lot to talk about.” He had also visited a friend’s house in the days leading up to his death, with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy accompanying him.
The events of Wednesday began with a call to emergency services around 17:00 local time, made by hotel staff reporting that a guest had “destroyed” his room and was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol”. While the guest’s life was not initially thought to be in danger, the front desk manager later expressed concern that he might be at risk of self-harm or suicide. Around seven minutes after the call was made, Payne is believed to have fallen from his third-floor balcony.
An autopsy carried out later that evening found Payne had sustained “multiple traumas” and “internal and external haemorrhaging”, with 25 injuries consistent with a fall from a great height. While authorities have yet to determine whether alcohol or drugs were in Payne’s system at the time of death, evidence of both was found in his hotel room, along with medication including the anxiety drug Clonazepam. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities interviewing witnesses to establish the “possible involvement of third parties in the events prior to the victim’s death”.
Payne’s bandmates have released heartfelt statements expressing their shock and grief at the news of his passing. Fans have also taken to social media to share tributes and memories of the singer, who rose to worldwide fame as part of one of the most successful boybands of all time. With more details set to emerge surrounding the circumstances of Payne’s death in the coming days, the music world is in mourning for a talented performer taken far too soon
