£35.99The music industry is in shock following the tragic death of Liam Payne, a former member of the boyband One Direction. Simon Cowell, who put the group together on The X Factor in 2010, described himself as “devastated” and “heartbroken” at the news of Payne’s death. Writing on Instagram, Cowell called Payne “kind, funny, sweet, thoughtful [and] talented,” and recalled his first audition for the show in 2008 when Cowell told him to come back in two years, and returned as part of One Direction.
Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, also paid tribute to the singer, describing him as “my angel” and saying she was “at a complete loss”. Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, has travelled to Buenos Aires where Payne passed away, to help identify his son’s body before it is repatriated to the UK. Argentine authorities have said a family member must identify the body before it can be released.
Other members of One Direction have also paid tribute to Payne. Niall Horan said he was “absolutely devastated” by the loss of his friend, while Harry Styles expressed his sympathy for Payne’s family, saying “his greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.” Louis Tomlinson echoed Styles’ sentiments, describing Payne as “the most vital part of One Direction”.
Zayn Malik praised Payne’s “positive outlook and reassuring smile”.
Payne’s passing has also prompted a wider response from the music industry. Sharon Osbourne, a former X Factor judge, wrote on social media that the industry had “let [Payne] down”. She asked, “You were just a kid when you entered one of the toughest industries in the world. Who was in your corner? Rest in peace my friend.”
