Eltham: Pregnant woman dies after being hit by Met Police car


A tragic accident in Eltham, south-east of London, has claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The incident occurred at around 18:15 on Thursday when an unmarked police vehicle collided with a car driven by a member of the public on the A20, near the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road. The woman, who was 38 years old and heavily pregnant, died as a result of her injuries. Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance, attended the scene.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the two officers who were in the unmarked car have been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for their injuries. Meanwhile, the woman’s next of kin have been informed. The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the IOPC confirmed that investigators have attended the scene to begin gathering evidence.

The identity of officers who were in the unmarked vehicle has not yet been disclosed. It is not clear whether they were responding to an emergency at the time of the collision. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. In a statement issued after the crash, Det Ch Supt Trevor Lawry expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the victims. He described the incident as “tragic”.

Road closures are still in place near the scene of the accident, and Det Ch Supt Lawry has advised motorists to find alternative routes. The Met has assured that the car was one of their own vehicles and not from a neighbouring force
