Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new head coach for England’s men’s national football team. Tuchel, 51, will take on the role officially starting from 1 January 2026. He has signed an 18-month contract and is taking over from Gareth Southgate, who resigned following England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 finals. Tuchel will be tasked with leading the team in the 2026 World Cup, with the goal of winning the tournament and ending England’s wait for a major trophy. The team has not won a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
At a media conference, Tuchel said he was excited at the prospect of working with a “very special and exciting group of players”. He explained that he was initially hesitant about making the switch from club to international football. However, he was won over by the opportunity to work towards the World Cup with England’s national team. Tuchel, who is from Germany, is only the third non-British permanent head coach of England’s men’s team.
Tuchel contrasted the decision-making process with his previous opportunity to take over as Manchester United’s manager. Tuchel mentioned that the speed and confidentiality of the process impressed him and convinced him to take the offer, adding that it was a decision made for the job and not against anything else. Tuchel brings a wealth of experience; he won the Champions League with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in 2022-23, and received recognition for outsmarting Pep Guardiola in the Champions League final of 2021.
In addressing critics who thought an Englishman should lead the national team, Tuchel said he hoped to convince the fans and prove that he was proud to be an English manager. Despite the FA having interviewed some English candidates for the role, Tuchel was ultimately selected by the FA due to his experience coaching in English football and his coaching credentials. Tuchel said he was passionate about football and excited about the task ahead of bringing the World Cup to England
