Man who killed partner with punch during holiday trip jailed


A man has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for killing his partner during a family altercation on the Isle of Man. John Meadows, 53, killed 56-year-old Jillian Hughes with a single punch near the Palace Hotel on Douglas Promenade on 29 March, according to Douglas Courthouse. Witnesses said the blow was a “boxer’s punch”, which was “quick as lightning”. Deemster Graeme Cook, who jailed Meadows for manslaughter, accused him of “cowardly actions”. Meadows had arrived with Ms Hughes and other family members on the same afternoon from Merseyside.

The court heard that the group, who had appeared “jovial”, visited several bars in the island’s capital but the mood had changed when two of the party were stopped from going back into Sam Webbs pub because there was a child with them.
