'I was a Milton Keynes mum trying to take my son's pain away'

Shalom Lloyd, a British-Nigerian pharmacist, was faced with the challenge of finding a natural solution to her son’s severe eczema. She decided to quit her job and remortgage her home in Milton Keynes to start a skincare company that would cater to her son’s sensitive skin. She began the company, Naturally Tiwa Skincare, on her kitchen table using raw shea butter and added other ingredients to create her own recipe which proved to be a success and transformed her son’s skin within three days.

The company, which was registered in June 2016, started trading in March 2018 and is now based in Stony Stratford. It employs about 70 women from two shea processing plants in Nigeria. Rather than being seen as philanthropy, Lloyd sees it as trade, empowering women who are working for their living. The raw material was sent to the UK to be manufactured, tested, and packaged before being stored at a Milton Keynes warehouse, ready for online orders to be processed by members of MK Snap – a charity that helps adults with learning difficulties.

Lloyd is proud to have a business that is founded by women, made by women, led by women but used by all. Her company’s niche is to cater to people with skin conditions or cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy, radiotherapy or menopausal women. She believes in doing the right thing – make the world a better place and make money doing it – simple. Her company’s dedication to sustainability led it to win a national award.

Coral Horn, the founder of Enterprise Vision Awards (EVAs), said the winners of the sustainable business category “showcased remarkable passion, dedication, and a clear vision for a more sustainable future,” with Naturally Tiwa Skincare’s “dedication to sustainability is unwavering.” The skincare company, although small, has managed to make a significant impact in the industry, earning several awards and commendations along the way
