Si King, best known as one half of the Hairy Bikers cooking duo, recently opened up about the struggle he has been facing since the death of his friend and co-star, Dave Myers. Myers died at the age of 66 in February after revealing his diagnosis with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy in 2022. In a recent first-person piece for The Sunday Times, King shared that while he has been struggling, he has decided to move forward, exactly what Myers would have wanted.
King shared that the past few months since Myers’ death “have been a struggle,” and at times he has wanted to just “jump on my bike and head into the sunset.” However, he has decided to reflect on his life with Myers and move forward, not dwell on the past. King and Myers were best friends for 30 years, and their relationship was sealed over a tandoori chicken masala and four poppadoms. Their first TV appearance together was The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook in 2004, and they went on to host a number of cooking and travel shows together.
Reflecting on Myers’ illness, King shared that filming the last series together was the most difficult thing he has ever had to do in his life. Myers’ illness was physically obvious, but as soon as the cameras started rolling, he was ready for a scrap. Along with remembering the good times over food, King talked about a camping trip they took in Namibia where they had a spiritual experience looking up at the African sky and truly saw their galaxy for the first time.
King is now putting together a new anthology of classic Hairy Bikers recipes and has a few new projects on the horizon. He also talked about the legacy they hope to have left, two regular blokes having a go at cooking for the average person. He shared that he believes they made a little bit of a difference and caught the attention of those who didn’t normally watch fancy cooking programmes on TV. While King knows he will miss Myers and their show, he is excited for what’s coming next
