Coldplay’s 10th album, Moon Music, has achieved a number one position in the UK by selling more copies than the rest of the Top 40 albums combined. Official Charts Company indicated that the album has sold 237,000 chart units, encompassing streams, downloads, and physical sales over the last week. The album’s opening week sales are the highest for a British album since Adele’s 30 was released in 2021.
After achieving this number one position with Moon Music, Chris Martin led Coldplay now shares the record with ABBA, Michael Jackson, and Queen for the number of appearances on the official albums chart. The Beatles hold the all-time record of topping the chart 16 times. The band shared their gratitude to their fans for their support on social media, saying “Thank you to everyone who supported the release of Moon Music. It truly means the world.”
Although the majority of sales of Moon Music, approximately 209,000 copies, were due to CDs and vinyl sales, the songs “Feels Like I’m Falling In Love” and “We Pray” played frequently enough to land just inside this week’s Top 20 singles chart. Since their debut, the band has been having fun promoting their album, including recent appearances on Saturday Night Live and the morning TV show “Today,” complete with musical puppets.
Despite the album’s success, Coldplay could not challenge Taylor Swift’s UK chart throne. The band fell just short of the 270,000 first-week sales Swift achieved for “The Tortured Poets Department” in April, meaning she holds the record for the year’s biggest first-week sales. Additionally, breakout pop star Sabrina Carpenter has broken a historic record for women artists by spending 19 weeks at number one in the UK single charts in 2024 with three hit singles: “Espresso” (7 weeks), “Please Please Please” (5 weeks), and “Taste” (7 weeks and continuing)
